What is an implant?

Implants are small metal cylinders (like metal “roots”) that are surgically implanted in your jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. The process can sound pretty gruesome, but patients frequently describe the process as no more complicated than getting a filling.

Why do I need an implant?

Many people choose implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Most people find that an implant is a good replacement for their missing tooth because it is secure and stable.
A dental implant may be right for you if you:

  • Wear dentures that slip or won’t stay in place.
  • Have partial dentures but cannot get used to the feel of all that hardware.
  • Have had to remove a one or just a few natural teeth.

Advantages of implants:

  • An implant can closely mimic a natural tooth and can feel just as comfortable.
  • Nearby teeth remain unchanged and do not have to be involved in the placement procedure.
  • They may help prevent shrinkage of the jawbone from tooth loss.
  • They can eliminate the need for a partial denture that must be removed at night.

Disadvantages of implants:

  • They require a surgical procedure to place them.
  • Implant placement may take longer and may require more dental visits than other options.
  • They may cost more than other treatment.

I think I need an implant. Now what?

Here at Lake Forest Dental, we do not place implants. We can refer you to a dental specialist who can do that. However, once the implant is placed and healed we will restore the teeth that rest on the implants. Great care is taken so the replacement teeth look and feel natural to you. Good dental work should look so natural that it doesn’t look like dental work!
